Ocucon Wins Best Coronavirus Innovation in the RTIH Awards

Ocucon has won the top prize for our OCCUPi solution in the RTIH Retail Innovation awards, in the Best Coronavirus Innovation category.

The award went to the company who has best turned to technology to solve the challenges presented by the Covid-19 era, improving in-store and/or online experiences for both staff and customers.

Ocucon was facing tough competition against companies such as; Currys PC World, Etam, Fender, and Missguided.

The nominated solutions were analysed and then voted on by a judging panel of retail leaders from companies such as; Office Depot, Marks and Spencer, Ocado, Studio, IMRG, and PMC Retail.

The judges were impressed with Occupi, and comments included;

Tiffany Lung, a Retail Analyst, who praised a “great use of AI to promote social distancing in-stores instead of the standard traffic light system.”

Gerald Dawson, the Finance Director at Forthglade Foods, commented: “Rather than an acceleration of existing trends, this is a solution to a brand new problem that no-one could foresee – actively managing the number of customers in a store. And there has been rapid deployment with Aldi.”

Ocucon CEO and Co-founder, Gary Trotter, said: “We're so proud to have won the top prize, especially since we were facing really tough competition. We're delighted that the judges and RTIH have recognised Occupi for this award.”

“The whole team here at Ocucon worked really hard to deliver an innovative and customer driven solution to help retailers solve the numerous challenges posed by this unprecedented global pandemic.”

This award win comes after we were recently named in Retail Insider’s Top 60 Digital Retail Innovations of 2020, beating the likes of; Walmart, Levis, Amazon and Starbucks for the 29th position.

Occupi uses deep learning technology to accurately assess how many people are in a store and works in tandem with a traffic light entry system to stop people entering until it is safe to do so.

In the latest update to the system, Occupi API allows a retailer to display in real time the number of customers in a store from this monitoring system, and to display it on their websites or apps. This means businesses can significantly enhance their customers’ experience, allowing them to make an informed decision, avoiding an unnecessary journey and long queues in the increasingly cold weather.
